I am very excited to launch my new Counselling and Psychotherapy service- Email Counselling! Having previously worked on a Crisis Helpline offering text-based support services, I came to appreciate how therapeutic writing can be for many people. Email Counselling can offer an accessible therapy option for people who may find it difficult to access therapy in a more “traditional” format. I undertook further specialist training to deliver Online and Telephone Counselling (80 hours+) after I had qualified as a Counsellor and Psychotherapist. I am experienced in offering text-based emotional support, so I have now undertaken additional specialist training to be able to offer Email Counselling and Therapy.
Like Online and Telephone Counselling and Psychotherapy, Email Counselling requires the development of a specific skillset gained through specialist training. It is not the same as emailing an acquaintance, friend or relative, although, I hope that you will feel at ease during the process. It is also not considered a less effective way of delivering therapy- it is a different option of support for people who have different preferences for how they are supported. It can also be a really helpful way of gaining support if you require additional time to process your thoughts and express yourself.
As with my real time ‘live’ face-to-face in-person, Online Counselling and Telephone therapy sessions, I set aside dedicated time to read your Therapy Email, to reflect on the content and to write my Therapeutic Response. Each exchange is considered as a session and so has its own dedicated slot in my calendar!
Please reach me at shelley@shelleyhendersontherapy.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Email Counselling can facilitate exploration of a number of client difficulties and are most likely to be appropriate for a range of general counselling issues, depending on your circumstances.
Due to the time delay between when you send your Therapy Email and when you receive my Therapeutic Response, Email counselling may not be appropriate for you if:
Please contact me to an express an interest and to find out more about Email Counselling and whether it might be an appropriate option for you.
If you decide that you would like to try out Email Counselling, you (the client) and I (the therapist) will agree a time for us to exchange our emails. You will send me one email of 500 words (maximum) by an agreed deadline. I will then respond to you (in 500 words) two days later, by the agreed deadline. This is considered as one Email exchange.
The Trial Email exchange is a paid for service to give you an opportunity to see what it feels like for you to communicate with a Therapist using this method. You are not locked in. If you decide that Email Counselling is not right for you, then there is no obligation to carry on- you can end the “sessions” once you have received my response. If you would like to carry on, you can access Email Counselling for as long as you need to. Session rates can be found below.
You would send one email per week by prior arrangement. This ensures continuity to the therapeutic process. Fortnightly Email Counselling may be available- please contact me directly to discuss this.
